Where Class 10 students lose marks in English

Based on 75 anonymised answer sheets checked by EvalAssist AI between April 2026 and October 2026, across 40 different question papers. Students scored 63% of the available marks on average.

What the answer sheets show

The lowest-scoring chapter was Writing: students scored 39% of the marks on its questions, against 63% across the whole paper.

What examiners look for: Answers here are marked on content, then expression. Quote or refer to the text, answer the exact question asked and keep to the word limit.

Students scored 68% on 1-mark questions but only 53% on 3-mark questions, which made up 15% of all the marks lost.

What examiners look for: Two- and three-mark answers usually carry one mark per point. Write as many distinct points as the marks, each in its own line, instead of one long paragraph.

In attempted long answers (4 marks or more), 7.8% earned full marks and 85% earned part of them; 26% of the marking points in them were missed or wrong.

What examiners look for: Partial marks are the norm in long answers. The marking scheme lists the steps; the missed ones are usually the final unit, the conclusion, a labelled diagram or a justification.

How we count: every figure on this page comes from at least 30 answer sheets, pooled from more than one school; no school, teacher or student can be identified. These are practice and school tests checked on EvalAssist AI, not CBSE board results, and the marks are the AI checker's. "No answer found" includes answers the checker could not locate on the sheet.
